Mia's e-portfolio

Mia has a diverse range of achievements and experiences in sociology and communication studies. She has conducted research on social issues and has presented her work at various conferences. She has also volunteered in mental health at the Veterans Hospital and worked with LGBTQ youth to prevent homelessness.

Through my sociology and communication studies, I got interdisciplinary learning that enabled me to uncover systemic inequality and use storytelling to push for social change. Combining the standpoint of sociology with the power of communication, I can speak for the homeless LGBTQ youth. 

In the Introduction to Sociology module, I learned that sociologists use social constructionism to analyze society and frame reality in power. Social constructionism took a new look at LGBTQ youth stigmatized as deviant based on social norms rather than objective truth.

Combining personal stories of struggle with "a home for every youth" to emphasize supportive programs through empathetic language and inspiring change. Sociological theory and communication techniques work together to show my growth as a holistic thinker who can use sociology's sharp analytical and theoretical view of inequality and communication's persuasive storytelling to convey ideas and messages. I can now use sociology to analyze complex social issues and tell empathetic stories to inspire social change by building understanding and shared humanity.
